News- Greece Sells its Islands
For those that dreamt of owning their own island paradise, some can possibly turn this into reality. In order to rid itself of extortionate debts, Greece is now selling or leasing some of their 6,000 islands.
Makis Perdikaris, director of Greek Island Properties, stated, “I am sad – selling off your islands or areas that belong to the people of Greece should be used as the last resort. But the first thing is to develop the economy and attract foreign domestic investment to create the necessary infrastructure. The point is to get money."
The Greek government hopes that by selling or leasing the islands for long-term, money will be injected into the economy that will consequently provide jobs and taxable income.
One of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations, Mykonos, will go on sale under the hope that wealthy investors will agree to transform the area into ‘luxury tourism’, thereby building hotel complexes and injecting capital into the area. Overall, prices range from two million euro to fifteen million euro. The islands can be as small as a jutting rock to over a thousand acres.
